Welt Online: As nerds and scientists get crazy

Muscles made of gum, which transfer waves in energy or eatable sensors, which measure the maturity level of fruits and vegetables. That is the result, when inventors get mad.

Lately the online news portal told us about new inventions. Among others the tech2b incubator based in the software park Hagenberg, was listed.

Welt-Online has interviewed Siegfried Bauer, professor at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz and says:
“The enterprise isiQiri has already launched Qfoil. The flexible plastics consists of small sensors which are thinner than one millimeter and which are able to catch focused beams of light. Due to this fact illustrations of a computer screen can be beamed on a wall and controlled by a laser pointer. A program can be started by touching the projected symbol with the focused beam of light.”

Picture: info graphic “Welt Online” man-made muscles get in motion with the help of current pulses (left). This principle can also be inverted (right): elastomers which are in motion help raising electrical tension

To be able to operate this flexible electronic which can be worked into textiles or printed upon them, the required accumulators have to be flexible too. Only in this case it would be possible to keep the MP3-Player within the pullover going. “We want to build the first elastic battery” says Bauer. A start has been made already. The Scientists have developed elastomeres and electrodes on the base of a gel which can be pulled to twice of the original length without making the battery inoperable. A gel in printed form should also be used for electrical pipes. An alternative could also be vapor deposited layers of gold.
