Aortenaneurysma - Medical software for visualization based on Stent-Graft

An aorta aneurysm is a pathological enlargement or protrusion of the aorta caused by a weakness of the aorta wall structure. If an aneurysm becomes too large, there is the risk of a rupture, meaning that the aneurysm could burst open, leading to the loss of a large volume of blood and causing immediate danger to life. This syndrome particularly affects older persons.

Detailed informationen

During the endovascular treatment of an aneurysm, a tube-shaped, plastic-coated metal grid, a so-called Stent-Graft, is introduced into the aorta to cover the protrusion spot. This way the blood will flow through the Stent-Graft and not through the aneurysm pocket. Over the course of the years after the operation, the Stent-Graft may start to migrate and deform, leading to life-threatening complications. Therefore life-long checks with annual computer tomography records (CT images) are necessary. With an additional, early, minor invasive operation, these complications can be largely avoided. The aim of this foundation project is the creation of a software product allowing quantifying and visualising the movements of the Stent-Graft on the basis of the patient’s CT records made at different points in time. The product is designed to be offered to radiological clinics and radiological departments of hospitals, enabling them to recognise potential complications caused by Stent-Graft movements at an early stage.
